(Marilee and Bob in the lobby of the historic Hood River Hotel)
DAY 9
Special
Surprises
Just when your heart thinks it can't hold any more beauty, up
pop three hundred forty-three more spectacles. Take driving along the Columbia
River, for example.
Mile after mile, mammoth pyramid-like
mountains plunged to the river's shore - so different from Eastern vistas -
uniquely breathtaking.
Now for our two unexpected treasures!! First, we stopped at a museum on a high bluff and gazed over some of the vast plains that are part of the Oregon Trail (could've walked two miles down and stood in actual wagon ruts but passed on that one).
Then, we stumbled upon the quaint community of Hood River - right on the banks of the Columbia - and stayed at the historic 1911 HOOD RIVER HOTEL!! You know how I love historic buildings - this one is a gem. Even boasts its very own ghost, Ola Bell, a previous owner. Doesn't get any better than that!
Actually, it does. At dinner in the hotel, we met two couples from - hold your horses, Nellie! - MADISON, ALABAMA - one Auburn and one U-Alabama couple (Go, War Eagle and Roll, Tide!!!) They have been to Hahira, Georgia and even - I'm not lying here - to Dixie. Now, people, it DOESN'T get any better than that!!! It was a moment - I'm telling ya! We high-fived when I told them I was a Seminole (but, out of respect - and to still stay married to Bob - I refrained from doing the "Chop"). Now, I know all my Yankee friends have no idea what I'm talkin' about - just keep smiling and read on.
To tell the truth, there is no more to read. Plum wore myself in that last bit. Love to all you brave souls who are still reading this little log. We love you everyone!
